Ivan Mihaljevic & Side Effects

Thoughts while I listen. First thoughts as I begin to listen… The vocalist has a very clean sound. He holds tone very well. Instrumentals are perfectly produced. Some of these riffs almost remind me of the band Tool.
The vocalist, Ivan, the more I listen to his voice, the more I like it. I am impressed by his sound. But not him alone, the rest of the band creates hints of nostalgia in my brain as to other bands that I feel their sound is inspired from. There is an excellent ability to create multiple sounds in a single song, with simple changes of speed during the song, which many bands are unable to complete. By the time "What is Underneath" began, I almost thought I was listening to "Party In The U.S.A." by Miley Cyrus, comically, I was wrong!!! This song starts out a little weird to me, but when Ivan extends his vocals a bit louder and farther out, his sound really does continue to impress me. They surely manage to do one thing that even some of the most well-known bands have found themselves not doing, managing volume levels. Many times I heard a band have a sound where the drums are louder than the vocalist, or the guitar is louder than the drums or the bass (for some reason) is actually louder than the lead guitar or various orders like that, But these guys really have it managed absolutely well, the voice sits right on top of the lead guitar which is around the same if not maybe a little higher volume than the drums and both lead the instrumentals while the Bass kindly brings the sound to fruition. "Driving force" has a much better intro than "What is Underneath", reminding me yet again of Tool with those riffs. The vocals begin, that easily reminds me of some sort of weird Dragonforce and Firewind mix that I am strangely loving. I feel like this song drags out a little longer than it needs to, but I'm sort of not complaining because I am sort of impressed so far.  I think. "Gilded Cage" seems to be the Ballad or the "Slow Song" of the  album. “Gift of Life" started and the opening with that acoustic sound really made me think of Immortal and how they always have 2 minute long acoustic intros to their most awesome songs. It kicks up, sounding undoubtedly great with some serious good guitar work, down again to a classy light guitar and piano mixture. It makes me want to say they're a Power Metal band, but they're closer to rock? Not sure how to categorize this. "Time Travel" is basically a huge instrumental track. It's nice to see this, many artists avoid this because they're afraid to do it and see how the fanbase reacts to it, where the old school bands like Metallica had one on every first album. Very refreshing. Makes me think of Dynasty Warriors with the way it sounds, too. "Eclipse" makes me think of Disney at first, but turns out to be another Epic song with clean vocals and a nice boisterous sound. More Dynasty Warriors instrumentals and it's another overall good song. "I Am" is kind of a moderately slow song, but definitely very good. Amazing instrumentals once again, a nice clean solo and really awesome lyrics. Very good tones again from Ivan and very good sound overall. Final thoughts of the album: excellent work.
